The Astrology of February 2021:
a reticent revolution
February is supercharged with Aquarian energy, with an historic gathering of planets occurring in the sign of revolution and creative genius. This Aquarius stellium includes the slower moving planets Jupiter and Saturn. The last time this happened was 1962, the start of the Sixties Cultural Revolution and Civil Rights movement. The winds of change are now ramping up again, preparing to break us out of our stuckness and constrictive molds. But this is not without pushback. Saturn is offering his resistance, making sure we’re standing on firm ground. As we peer over the precipice of great change, we might feel excitement, mixed with reticence, anxiety, and confusion.
Meanwhile, Mercury is retrograding through Aquarius, asking us to look back before taking our next steps. At the same time, Saturn is preparing to square Uranus, in one of the most momentous transits of the year. The past is clashing with the future as we determine how to proceed and unshackle from previous karma, habits, structures, and limitations, both in our personal lives and the world at large. Integrity and meticulous care are necessary as we rebuild our lives, relationships, and society with thoughtful determination. Part of us may feel like escaping or checking out as we experience the uncertainty of rapid change. While the road ahead is bumpy and unpredictable, we can drop into our deeper knowing that it’s ultimately leading us to higher ground.
MERCURY RETROGRADE
Mercury began retrograding through Aquarius on January 30, stationing direct on February 20. While many fear Mercury retrogrades, they are opportunities to pause and turn inward, processing what’s already happened. Unspoken communication is stronger, and we can experiment speaking with our hearts rather than our words. During this time, unfinished business and old relationship karma returns for recalibration so we can tie up loose ends and clear the air. With Mercury retrograde falling in humanitarian Aquarius, it’s a powerful time to put our heads together to reflect on how we will rewrite the laws of our land and social norms. What will it take for us to survive together and treat our planet with sacred regard?
AQUARIUS STELLIUM
Throughout February, a significant stellium forms in Aquarius, sparking rebellious energy that’s pushing us toward change. From February 1 to 18, six planets group together in Aquarius—the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and Pallas. They are joined by a seventh planet, the Moon, from February 9 to 12. This hasn’t happened since the early 1960s—a significant period of shock, revolution, and innovation in music, art, politics, and society, which we’re now likely to experience again.
Aquarian energy is unpredictable, and we may feel anxious as we enter unfamiliar waters. It’s important to stay centered in our hearts and find ample creative outlets to offset the detachment and headiness of this Aquarian period. We can harness the sign’s loyalty, friendliness, genius, and objectivity to work through our blockages and establish smoother channels that lead to realizing our dreams. As vaccines are distributed, we may even begin to feel the hope of what life could be after restrictions lift. How can we prepare ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually for what’s to come?
AQUARIUS NEW MOON
The Aquarius New Moon arrives on February 11, conjunct Pallas, the Warrior Goddess asteroid, who helps us to strategize, problem solve, and negotiate. High intelligence can now guide us forward, as we clarify our visions and hash out details for how we will accomplish them. Forming a wide conjunction to Mercury retrograde, it’s important to be careful and thorough. We may need to revisit problems from the past before leaping ahead.
SATURN SQUARE URANUS
The first of three Saturn-Uranus squares arrives on February 17, beginning one of the most significant transits of the year. Themes showing up now will carry forward throughout 2021. Market instability, environmental activism, and morality in the context of technology are issues that will likely emerge. We’re experiencing tension between established norms and progressive ideals, as we unstick from the status quo and lay careful groundwork for a more progressive and liberated world. This is not the time to cling to the past or cavalierly detach from reality. Our wild ideals and steady pragmatism are sandpapering each other, ensuring that we have firm footing and good values in place. From here, we can undergo the hard work of establishing egalitarianism, independence, diversity, and innovation, catapulting us into the future.
VIRGO FULL MOON
A gentler energy emerges toward the end of the month, with a Virgo Full Moon arriving on February 27. Jupiter has just trined the North Node, while Venus and the Sun have entered compassionate Pisces. Our new shared morality is clarifying, as optimism breaks through. With Uranus supporting this Full Moon, insights and positive change are possible as we feel the blessings of diligent, healing Virgo. Sudden progress around health is also possible, especially if we’ve been organizing and making positive changes in our everyday lives. Taking a step back, it’s an important time to ask: What services can we contribute to collective change? How can we help to heal ourselves and others? With Mars trining Pluto, we may feel renewal of strength, passion, and power, and greater focus on our direction forward. Timelines are speeding up, and the impossible may now feel possible. We only have to take one step at a time to make it happen, with kindness, consideration, and firm resolve.
FEBRUARY SUMMARY
February is marked by two historic astrological events—a rare gathering of seven planets in Aquarius, and Saturn squaring Uranus. We are entering a period of profound change and revolution, which we haven’t witnessed since the 1960s. Cultural and societal change are inevitable. We are rethinking all facets of being human, as we reinvent old systems and structures. Meanwhile, Saturn is tempering the energies of revolution, making sure that we embody maturity and integrity. He’s questioning us before allowing us to move forward. We are working within the current paradigm to establish significant progress and greater equality, as we also prioritize fixing our relationship with the Earth. While these are exciting times, we have to work extra hard to stay heart-centered and grounded, as Aquarius brings us into hyper-cerebral spaces, while whipping us with his electric change. Luckily, ample hope is available to us this month, even as we experience struggles, setbacks, and grief. We have no choice but to embrace our new reality—there’s no use in clinging to what was. The more we can rally our excitement for the future, offering our service while practicing self-care, the more we can harness these energies for our benefit. This is a beautiful time to break out of old ruts. If we can think outside our own boxes, anything is possible. We can shift our focus toward new ways of thinking, being, and relating, allowing others to walk their paths at their own pace, experiencing their own karmic reckonings without our interference. With hard work, passion, rebellion, and mindful resolve, we’re beginning to co-create the next version of our shared reality.
Like freshly fallen snow, may we feel the purity of our hearts while the thunder of change rumbles through the mountains. May we embrace Aquarius’s electric chaos to unstick from outworn patterns and embrace the excitement of collective rebirth.
