March 21, 2020 — Saturn moves into Aquarius today, beginning a new three-year cycle in humanity. Aquarius is the revolutionary and rebel. Saturn is the Wise Elder, who makes us slow down and peel away what’s unnecessary. Saturn tests us see if our ideas and frameworks are practical and solid. He helps us master our skills and wisdom so we can build our visions into reality for the long-haul.
Saturn in Aquarius can also spark isolation, forcing us to reflect on what is working in our lives, and what isn’t. We have the chance to question our priorities, and determine how we can weave our fresh ideas and perspectives into the fabric of our daily lives, families, careers, economy, politics, and culture at large.
As Saturn makes his first ingress into the sign of the Water Bearer, Pluto is close-by, lending particular potency. These times are anything but casual. We’re facing our shadows and fears, and transforming reality as we know it. Shaky, heartbroken, and uncertain, we’re watching the old paradigm fall away as we stare into the void of an unwritten future. As we can see, much is out of our control, but much is. We are learning to surrender, while recognizing our agency as never before. It’s time to release the familiar so we can work toward creating something much more functional, nurturing, and inspiring.
As we drop into our hearts, we may notice another Aquarian feeling rising within us—hope. Through all of this, we’re learning to work together as we rewrite the laws of our lands, We’re re-conceiving what it means to be human, while caring more for each other and our beautiful planet. The old ways weren’t supporting us, but even those who were ready for change may fear the great unknown. The way we’ll pull this off is by joining hands, pooling our resources, and remembering that we are here together, on the same shore of a strange land, which is awaiting our discovery, ingenuity, and heart.
HISTORY OF SATURN IN AQUARIUS
1962-64
Saturn moves in 29.5 year cycles around the zodiac. He moved through Aquarius almost sixty years ago, from 1962 to 1964. This was a seminal period in human history, when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. In fact, 1963 was considered the defining year for the Civil Rights movement—the largest movement of racial reform in history.
Along with “I Have a Dream,” 1963 brought the March on Washington. Malcom X gave his “Message to the Grass Roots” speech, considered one of the most important speeches of the 20th century. These events sparked deep and long-lasting social reform—the perfect reflection of Saturn in Aquarius.
1991-93
The last time Saturn moved through Aquarius was 1991 to 1993. This era brought major technological milestones, which changed the shape of society. Aquarius rules technology and innovation, and during this time, we saw the birth of the World Wide Web and the first GMS telephone call.
Aquarius fights for individual liberation, and this period was also saw the dissolution of Apartheid in South Africa. Meanwhile, the grunge scene took over mainstream culture as a rebellion against corporate America.
this time
History demonstrates that Saturn in Aquarius sparks significant and long-lasting innovations and changes in the fabric of society and how we live and relate to one another. This time will be no exception.
Here, we are beginning Saturn’s journey through Aquarius during the COVID-19 pandemic. Already, we are experiencing Aquarian calamity and upheaval, which will certainly lead to long-lasting change in our culture and society. We are having to support each other more, in true Aquarian form. And Saturn, in his way, has forced us into isolation so we can examine ourselves more deeply and realistically to see what needs changing in our current paradigm. We are reflecting on everything from money to how we cook, connect, live together, and relate to Mother Earth.
Meanwhile, Uranus (Aquarius’ ruler) is moving through Taurus for another five years, and the most significant changes during this period are likely to relate to Taurean domains—money, food and farming, the feminine, and environmentalism. Great revolution and technological innovations are on the horizon—ones that will likely incorporate compassion and morality, speaking to problems such as income disparity, unkind policies, racism, misogyny, homelessness, and pollution.
Aquarius is the pinnacle of human potential, and as other outer planets begin to join Saturn by the end of the year and into 2022 and 23, we will be moving further into a new age in humanity—one that is meant to be brighter, higher-minded, egalitarian, and more compassionate. Much of that future depends on us now—how much we are able to work our minds, notice what needs changing, and join hearts and hands to help each other however we can.
Saturn in Aquarius Aspiration
In this time of great change and uncertainty, may we tune into the Earth and our visions of what could be. May we work together to find practical ways to live in peace and to create enlightened society—a new paradigm that reflects our interconnection, cooperation, and love.
