The Astrology of SEPTEMBER 2024:
DRAMA AS ECLIPSE SEASON BEGINS

Picture Atlas of the Heavens by Edmund Weiss

September 1, 2024 — The astrology of September takes us on a dramatic ride. Pluto returns to Capricorn on September 1 for a final stint, forcing us to revisit old, unresolved issues. The good news is that this time, Uranus trines Pluto. The planet of electric change and liberation is supporting us in transforming Capricornian issues connected to systems, structures, society, government, tradition, outworn patterns, and patriarchy. While it may feel like we’re returning to frustrating cycles and subject matter, Uranus is ultimately helping us to break free from the past once and for all.

As the month begins, a Virgo New Moon lights up the Jupiter-Saturn square, offering a chance for a fresh start as we renegotiate our agreements. A Pisces Full Moon opens the eclipse vortex on September 17—an extra spiritual, transformative eclipse that softens our hearts and reminds us of forgiveness, unity, and unconditional love.

We may feel rattled by the destabilizing transits of the month—Mercury squares Uranus, Uranus retrogrades, and Mars squares Neptune. Our minds are shifting, our direction is foggy, and our vitality is a little low. It’s time to breathe, rest, and take good care of ourselves, allowing for twists, turns, sandpapering, and release. We can trust the universe and surrender to the currents of karma and life, which may feel like they’re thrashing us around.

It may help to remember that we came to this planet for a reason—to learn lessons, liberate, return to love, and help others do the same. If we embrace the electricity of the month, we can take great strides toward our personal and collective awakening and evolution. The key is to embrace change and stop clinging to destructive cycles that we’ve outgrown.

September 2024 TRANSITS

URANUS STATIONS RETROGRADE

Uranus stations retrograde on September 1 at 27º Taurus. Surprises, changes, and breakthroughs are likely as the planet of shock turns inward.

PLUTO RETURNS TO CAPRICORN

On September 1, Pluto returns to Capricorn after a second stint in Aquarius, which began in January. For the past fifteen years, Pluto has been in a journey through Capricorn, challenging old paradigms, systems, structures, and societal norms. Now, he’s wrapping up this transit.

While Pluto’s return to Capricorn the last two times felt a little brutal, like we were returning to old frustrations and patterns, this time is different. Uranus is trining Pluto until he returns to Aquarius once and for all on November 19. Uranus is the planet of instant liberation, shock, and change, so this time will feel like we’re reversing course only to find freedom once and for all. We’re making a final stop before entering entirely new energies, marked by humanitarianism and rebellion.

As Uranus moves into Gemini next year, he will once again offer his support to Pluto in early Aquarius. Rather than liberating from the past, we will feel like we’re catapulting into the future.

VIRGO NEW MOON

A Virgo New Moon arrives on September 2, falling opposite Saturn while squaring Jupiter. This lights up an ongoing square that signifies major cultural and personal shifts. This New Moon is asking us, “Is this still what we want?” It’s time to rethink our agreements and commitments and begin again with clean slates. As Mercury awakens from its retrograde, we are slowly making progress after a period of tension, misunderstandings, and miscommunications.

MARS SQUARE NEPTUNE

On September 2, Mars in Gemini squares Neptune in Pisces—both at the last degree of the sign. Confusion, scattered energies, and disillusionment are possible. In order to harness this transit properly, we can take time to meditate, swim, pray, rest, or call on our creative inspiration. We are more connected to spirit and realms unseen than usual. At this same time, clarity and logical action are more difficult to attain. We can surrender and trust the path that’s unfolding for us now, recognizing that it may be better than anything we could choose or bulldoze.

MARS IN CANCER

Mars enters Cancer on September 4. The planet of action now enters the sign of safety, security, family, vulnerability, and protection. We might remember to relax our triggers and take care of ourselves emotionally by exercising and releasing steam. The beauty is that we’re feeling more tender and homebound. We can exert ourselves toward nesting, cooking food, and taking care of those we love, being careful not to become territorial or overly protective.

VENUS CONJUNCT SOUTH NODE

Venus conjoins the south node on September 4 at 6º Libra. We are diving into old, painful patterns around love and worthiness. We’re ready to let them go, releasing all that’s blocking us from our highest Venusian potentials.

MERCURY IN VIRGO

Mercury enters Virgo on September 8. Here, Mercury is happiest—he is in both domicile and exaltation. In Virgo, Mercury is witty, intelligent, detail-oriented, and sensible. This is a good time to concentrate, edit, write, have reasonable dialogues, or complete tedious tasks. Our rational minds are very strong now.

VENUS TRINE JUPITER

On September 14, Venus, planet of love, trines Jupiter, planet of gold light and expansion. We may feel extra sociable, beautiful, and lucky in love. Pleasure and romance are abundant. It’s a beautiful day for a date, party, decadent meal, dressing up, or spending time with those we love most.

PISCES FULL MOON LUNAR ECLIPSE

A Pisces lunar eclipse forms on September 17 at 25º Pisces. This is a potent lunation, triggering release, spiritual growth, transformation, healing, and forgiveness. Falling conjunct Neptune while trining Uranus and Pluto, we are undergoing a process of letting go in order to make room for a new path that’s emerging. This eclipse is helping us accept change and integrate profound lessons that are available to us now. We can make space to grieve, cry, make art, listen to music, or connect with higher powers. Over the next two weeks, until the solar eclipse, we may notice our karma speeding up. Auspicious events help us move quickly into new chapters of grace and evolution.

SUN IN LIBRA / EQUINOX

On September 22, the Sun enters Libra, marking the fall equinox in the northern hemisphere, spring in the southern. Libra represents the scales, and as the season begins, day and night are of equal length. This is a turning point—a shift of light that marks a new energetic chapter.

Libra is the sign of romance, harmony, and relationships. Our focus is moving from Virgo’s perfectionism to Libra’s charm and acceptance. We can spend time with the people and things we love, moving further into appreciating all of the beauty and connections that surround us.

VENUS IN SCORPIO

Venus enters Scorpio on September 22, increasing our desire for intimacy. We now want to go deeper into love and relationships—beyond the superficial. We are building our capacity for truth, moving through fears while sharing secret spaces that make us feel close and seen.

September 2024 ASPIRATION

As summer comes to an end, may we accept the tides of change and relax into new lessons and awakening. May we see chaos and confusion as a chance for liberation, dancing in their seas while trusting the universe and our capacity for love, connection, and forgiveness.
