The Astrology of April 2021:
Taking the Leap
As we begin April, Aries the Ram is in command, leading us out of the murkiness and confusion of March, into our clarity, strength, and forward momentum. At the start of the month, a stellium of planets gathers in confrontational Aries. We’re regaining confidence and courage, truly embracing the energies of Spring. It’s time to emerge as bright green buds from the dank earth—refreshed, audacious, and determined.
Over the past year, we’ve had ample time to reflect and to clarify our desires. Now is the time to take action—to speak our dreams aloud, then fulfill them. Later in the month, Mercury, Venus, and the Sun all enter sensual Taurus, soon crossing paths with electric Uranus. The transits are providing us the chance to break out of our old ruts and stagnation as they invigorate us with currents of change. If we’re still caught in outworn patterns, we’ll experience necessary disruption—outside circumstances jolting us onto unexpected trajectories. At the end of the month, the planets spark alchemy in love and communication. We’re diving deep into our shadows, truth, and obscuration, and transmuting heavy baggage. Whatever happens, we are ready to revitalize our bodies, minds, and souls, as we turn the page to the next chapter.
Mercury Enters Aries
Mercury enters Aries on April 3, bringing powerful mental clarity—a welcome relief after submerging our minds in the dreaminess and uncertainty of Pisces. Conflicts are possible now, which may be necessary and helpful in restoring our relationships. We’re learning to assert our needs and clarify where we stand in productive ways. Mercury will soon meet with Chiron on April 9. We’ll be ready to heal unresolved wounds around communication and our own mental patterns. Painful memories, words, and exchanges could arise now, offering us opportunities to heal.
Aries New Moon
An Aries New Moon arrives on April 11, in the midst of a stellium of five planets in the same sign. The New Moon always sparks beginnings. Since this one falls in the first sign of the zodiac, the possibility for fresh starts is even stronger. With this lunation, we are truly kicking off the astrological New Year, initiating projects and stepping into new versions of ourselves. What will be our focus over the next year? What does our inner child yearn for? This New Moon sextiles Mars and Saturn, while squaring Pluto in Capricorn. Old fears could now emerge, forcing us to meet our demons with bravery, slaying dragons that we’ve been too afraid to even face. It’s time to transform old blockages into wisdom and embrace a new path. Luckily, the planets are infusing us with motivation, willpower, and ample support.
Venus Square Pluto
As Venus squares Pluto on April 11, the same day as the Aries New Moon, old relationship wounding is up for transformation. Passions are high, as we purge old resentments, difficulties, and conditioning, alchemizing our hearts so they’re born anew. This is not the time to deceive to ourselves or others. Truth is prevailing, even in our own inner dialogues. We can be radically honesty with ourselves, examining how we’ve been showing up in our friendships and relationships, while making necessary adjustments.
Sun and Mercury in Taurus
On April 19, the Sun and Mercury both enter Taurus, slowing us down so that we can follow through on our Aries impulses. Practicality and dedication are ready to inspire our next steps, as we place careful attention on how to fulfill our desires. Aries is the needed spark to help us set things in motion, while Taurus helps us slow down and inch toward beautiful completion.
Scorpio Full Moon / Pluto Stations Retrograde
The Scorpio Full Moon arrives on April 27, opposite to Uranus, and square to Saturn. These are challenging planetary transits that are dropping us into our depths, helping us anchor into profound change and liberation without giving up. Fortunately, a Grand Trine emerges in the background, a triangle forming around Earth between the Moon, Mars, and Jupiter. We have the ability to grow up and persevere, to embrace our shadows and carry on with greater maturity and resolve. Venus and Mercury cross Uranus in the days prior to the Full Moon, and we are truly turning the wheel—breaking out of the past and embracing new ways of loving, relating, and communicating. In the larger world, our resources, money, food, and farming practices could emerge as pressing issues as we determine our nexts step forward as a collective.
Meanwhile, Pluto, ruler of Scorpio, has just stationed retrograde, so there’s extra weight to this Moon—an internal reflection that’s calling us into the cauldron, helping us learn that pain is not punishment, pleasure is not reward. We can embrace our challenges and the scarier layers of who we are, surrendering to what is and loving exactly who we are.
From here, we can carry on envisioning and building the world, life, and relationships we want to inhabit. More change is coming. What do we desire as we leap into a new age? How will we participate in our collective reinvention?
April Summary
April is a month of fire and action, pushing us to leave behind the sleepiness of March. The Aries New Moon on April 11 is the true initiation of Spring, as a stellium of planets forms in Aries, the first sign of the zodiac. We can harness the Ram’s courage, initiative, and leadership in order to take our leaps. It’s time to emerge from our caves and return to the world with clarity and excitement. This is the month to initiate new projects and hash out unresolved problems, mastering the wisdom of healthy confrontation. By the end of the month, Venus and Mercury will conjoin with Uranus, facilitating big breakthroughs. We’re ready to shake off lethargy and the heavy reflection of the past year so we can experience instant liberations.
