The Astrology of January 2021:
Preparing for Electric Change

January provides initial glimpses into a year of electric change. It’s important that we organize, prioritize, and practice powerful self-care in order to withstand the wild currents that are already underway. February promises to be an historic and revolutionary month, and we need to prepare.

This is not the time to resist change or insist on lying, cheating, or harming ourselves or others. The planets tell us that integrity and truth will be rewarded. Those who’ve been fighting for beneficial change, who’ve been looking inward and unsticking from unhealthy patterns, will feel much more supported by these new energies that are beginning to strike. For those of us having trouble releasing the past, this month could feel more difficult.

Whatever we feel, the planets are inviting us to mature and take greater responsibility for our selves, families, communities, and the world around us. It’s vital that we prioritize sanity and touch in with our own center—rooting into the Earth and opening to the Divine. This way, we can weather the storms of change and upheaval, and offer ourselves in meaningful ways, large or small.

Mercurial chaos

January begins with Mercury out of bounds conjunct explosive Pluto and square to chaotic Eris. Communication, anxiety, and news bubbling over as we begin a New Year that will be full of the energies of change and liberation. Mercury will return in bounds on January 4, helping us find clarity.

Mars in Taurus

Mars enters Taurus on January 6, conjunct Uranus for the following week. We may feel frazzled, frustrated, or angry, as the energy of revolution kicks up around us. Mars is the planet of violence, drive, and passion, while Uranus is unpredictability and rebellion. Deep breaths, long baths, and comfort food will help Mars in Taurus absorb the charges from Uranus’ jolts.

Venus in Capricorn, Mercury in Aquarius

Venus enters Capricorn on January 8, the same day that Mercury enters Aquarius. We may experience fresh ideas and breakthroughs in our conversations with others, at the same time that we feel a sense of commitment and somberness infuse our relationships, values, and creative pursuits. We may harness the inspiration of Mercury in Aquarius and the discipline of Venus in Capricorn to become more productive in completing our projects and realizing our desires. With Venus trining Mars, we might feel cozy in our close relationships, even if more stressful energies are playing out in the world at large.

Jupiter Sextile Chiron

The potential for healing is strong on January 11, as Jupiter sextiles Chiron. This is a beautiful day for meditation, energy healing, and practicing self-care.

Capricorn New Moon

The Capricorn New Moon on January 13 is tense and transformative, forming a tight conjunction to Pluto, Lord of the Underworld. The lunation is also near to Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn, who creates obstacles to test our resilience and maturity and help us grow. In the collective, we may notice power struggles. Integrity and truth are set to win out, helping to lead us into the next cycle with a sturdier foundation. But peace may not come without a struggle.

Uranus Stations Direct

Uranus, planet of revolution, stations direct on January 14, setting the stage for a significant stellium in Aquarius, co-ruled by Uranus. Six planets are ready to join together in February, in a rare configuration that’s set to bring revolutionary energies, similar to the 1960s. The energies of change are heightening as we move more rapidly into the future paradigm.

Mercury Enters His Shadow, Stations Retrograde

On January 15, Mercury enters his shadow, preparing us for a retrograde in Aquarius that begins on January 30. Mercury retrograde can help us integrate what’s happening in the world at large, especially as it falls in Aquarius, which rules humanity. We can meditate and slow down our minds, writing and talking with therapists, counseling, and close friends to process any chaos that’s swirling through our minds.

Jupiter Squares Uranus

On January 17, Jupiter squares Uranus, and the energies of revolt are on high. Protests and large-scale revolts could occur as freedom-loving, erratic Uranus becomes magnified and expanded by bigger-than-life Jupiter.

Aquarian Stellium Begins

The Sun then enters Aquarius on January 19, and Mars joins Uranus on January 20. The winds of change are brewing, and the electric storm of Uranus and Aquarius is beginning to jolt us out of the old and stagnant into something completely new and unpredictable.

January Aspiration

Calling on the stillness of winter, may we gather our strength and find the courage to embrace change and release stagnation. May we prioritize integrity, truth, and compassion, as the the waves of change light up with phosphorescence, jolting us into a revolutionary future.
